Transportation

From San Francisco Airport (SFO):

  1. TAXI Fare to Berkeley: approximately $60.

  2. SHUTTLE SERVICES

    Note: The shuttle below has a good reputation. Check the names carefully; one of the scams involves copycat names. If you choose to use a different shuttle service, be sure to agree upon a price before accepting to use the service, and be aware that the driver may wait (sometimes up to an hour!) for the shuttle to fill up with passengers before leaving.

  3. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

    BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT
    (BART) to Berkeley: Take a Richmond-bound train to the Downtown Berkeley Station, then take a taxi to the conference hotel. (Evenings and Sundays, the Richmond-bound train does not run from San Francisco. Instead take a Concord or Dublin train and transfer to Richmond train at 12th St. Station in Oakland.) BART runs from 6 am to 12 midnight. Trip takes approximately 1 hour. Fare: $5.50

From Oakland Airport (OAK):

    Bayporter Express

  3. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

    Take the Air-BART shuttle to the Coliseum BART station. The bus runs every 15 minutes from 6:00 am to midnight. Fare: $2.00.

    BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT (BART) to Berkeley: Take a Richmond-bound train to the Berkeley Station, then take a taxi to the conference hotel. Runs from 6 am to 12 midnight. Fare: $1.90

Travel and Lodging

  • Reasonable expenses for airfare, hotel and local travel will be reimbursed for all invited participants. (details below)
  • Oakland Airport is the closest major airport to Berkeley and Richmond, although San Francisco Airport is not much further, and may offer a broader variety of flights for those traveling from outside California.
  • The workshop has arranged for hotel rooms at the Doubletree Hotel, located at the Berkeley Marina, just west of Interstate 80 in Berkeley. Reservations should be made directly by the participants, by calling 510-548-7920. Be sure to mention the group name for the reservation “PEER Soil Property Workshop. ” Reservations must be made by February 26th, 2004.
  • A shuttle from the Doubletree Hotel to the Richmond Field Station will be provided each day. Therefore, a rental car is not required.

Reimbursable Expenses

  • Coach air fare, reserved as early as possible.
  • 3 days of lodging for individuals from the East Coast, Mid-west, or overseas, 2 days for those from the West Coast. Participants are encouraged to stay at the Workshop hotel, but those staying elsewhere can be reimbursed up to the equivalent cost.
  • Up to $100 allowance for travel between the airport and hotel, and up to $50 for other incidental expenses. Meals are largely provided as part of the Workshop activities.
