This NEES Grand Challenge Project brings together researchers, educators, engineers, and public policy experts in a five-year program to develop effective strategies for identifying seismically hazardous older concrete building construction and promoting effective mitigation strategies.
Research consists in four areas:
- Pilot studies of risk in existing cities
- Laboratory and field testing of components and structures
- Model development
- Development of mitigation strategies
Education occurs through
- Training of undergraduate and graduate students
- Development of education materials for students and practitioners
Engineers and Public Policy Professionals are involved through
- The Concrete Coalition
- Advisory panels
- Workshops
The project was initiated in January 2007 and will continue through December 2012.
