Project Title/ID Number Data Development for Loss Modeling: Nonstructural Hazard Mitigation in the Life Science Building Testbed—1202002
Start/End Dates 10/1/02—9/30/03
Project Leader Mary Comerio (UCB/Faculty)
Team Members Ryan Smith (UCB/Grad Student), Jung In Kim (UCB/Grad Student)
Project goals and objectives

The first goal is coordination of the UC Science Testbed—holding meetings, sharing data, and completing the Testbed Report. The second goal is to provide building contents data for fragility studies in database and GIS formats for loss modeling. The third goal is to assemble data on downtime to be used in loss modeling.

Role of this project in supporting PEER’s vision
The UC Science Testbed demonstrates the full range of the PEER methodology - from the assessment of structural and nonstructural losses to the estimates of cost and downtime.

Methodology employed

This project is focused on database development and calibration of loss models.

Brief description of past year’s accomplishments and more detail on expected Year 6 accomplishments
In year 5, detailed building contents data was provided to Makris and Hutchinson for shake table tests, and to Beck and Porter for a first round of probabilistic loss modeling.
Other similar work being conducted within and outside PEER and how this project differs
Several professional engineers are attempting to provide design services for non-structural anchoring, but none are actually testing building contents. Miranda is looking at building nonstructural elements in the Van Nuys Testbed, but not contents.
Plans for Year 7 if this project is expected to be continued
If the project is continued, it would be to look at the impacts of detailed building performance assessment on the loss estimates for a campus of buildings.

Describe any instances where you are aware that your results have been used in industry
I have been asked to advise UCSF and Genentech on the anchoring equipment in their labs, and I am consulting with a major Art Museum on Performance based design.
Expected milestones

Completion of the Testbed Report for the 2004 Annual Meeting.

Deliverables

Data to other researchers and the final Testbed report.
