Applications are invited for the position of Structural Laboratory (SL) Engineer in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
The University of Canterbury is in the process of completing the construction of a new state of the art 840m2 structural engineering laboratory with 9m high strong walls and a 300m2 strong floor. The new facility increases the laboratory testing capacity and capabilities of this world renowned department in structural and seismic engineering.
The successful candidate will be expected to manage existing and develop new resources to support research, teaching and commercial activities in the laboratory. The SL Engineer will interact with technical staff, academic staff, students and clients to ensure the successful timely completion of a wide variety of projects. In doing this, it is expected that the SL Engineer will oversee the lab testing programme and utilise effective management skills to encourage all parties (students, technical staff, clients and academic staff) to clearly communicate and ensure that realistic test plans are developed and adhered to. Other important duties will include peer review of structural drawings and experimental test plans, development of new instrumentation and monitoring techniques that are relevant to the laboratories activities and engagement with national and international partners that operate similar large scale testing facilities.
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) specializing in structural engineering (5+ years’ experience) and should either have or be eligible to pursue registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng). Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in project management or site supervision is considered an asset. Research experience and a post graduate qualification in structural engineering is desirable.
