Moehle Delivers CEE Spring Distinguished Lecture

Jack Moehle, T.Y. and Margaret Lin Professor of Engineering at UC Berkeley’s Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department, and former PEER Director, has been selected to deliver the CEE Spring Distinguished Lecture. He will speak on “Performance-Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings”.

The surge in tall building design and construction in the mid-2000s was notable not only for the number of buildings but also for the innovative structural systems being used. Most designs fell outside the prescriptive provisions of the building code, requiring an alternative performance approach.

Moehle was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (2014), named Académico Correspondiente by the Academia de Ingeniería Mexico (2015), received SEAONC’s Helmut Krawinkler Award (2015), and named a fellow in the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute (2015).

Moehle’s research interests include design and analysis of structural systems with an emphasis on earthquake engineering, reinforced concrete construction, and new and existing buildings and infrastructure. His work with PEER includes the “Mitigation of Collapse Risk in Older Concrete Buildings” project which identifies just how widespread the collapse hazard is in our existing building stock and develops engineering and policy tools to identify and reduce the risk of hazardous buildings, as well as the “Tall Buildings Initiative” which developed design criteria for building systems that rise beyond the heights covered by the prescriptive building code.
