Los Angeles Releases Earthquake Plan

Resilience_by_DesignOn December 8, 2014, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti released a plan to address the city’s greatest earthquake vulnerabilities, including timelines for mandatory retrofitting of both soft-story and non-ductile reinforced concrete buildings.

The plan is contained in Resilience by Design, a report created by technical experts, led by USGS seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, in consultation with businesses, property owners, and other stakeholders. In addition to strengthening buildings, preparedness and resiliency measures outlined in the report include protection of regional water supply and communications infrastructure.

Support for the plan was given by leaders from the Building Owners and Management Association of Greater Los Angeles (BOMA), the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC), and the US Resiliency Council, of which PEER is a founding member.
