The 2013 PEER Summer Internship program formally concluded at the Northridge 20 Symposium at the University of California, Los Angeles on January 16-17, 2014. After an intensive 10 week research experience at one of the host institutions (City of San Francisco; Stanford University; University of Washington; University of California, Davis; and University of California, Berkeley), the students shared their research projects and results with the wider earthquake engineering community.

Each of the students carefully prepared a research poster based on tips learned during their orientation, communication workshop, and feedback from their mentors. They were well-prepared to share their research projects after practicing with their fellow interns and mentors during three separate presentation opportunities over the summer.

The interns presented their posters alongside graduate students to a diverse group of over 400 attendees including earth scientists, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, risk modelers, emergency managers, policy makers, and public officials attending the symposium that commemorated the twentieth anniversary of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Due to the importance of this historic earthquake, this symposium took the place of the 2013 PEER Annual Meeting. With nearly 600 attendees, the symposium provided the 2013 interns unique exposure to a vast array of earthquake topics and allowed them to engage with a wider cross-section of earthquake mitigators from across the state of California than typically possible at PEER Annual Meetings.
