Mary Comerio Distinguished Lecture Now Online

Video of October 14, 2013 presentation now available

Professor Mary Comerio’s EERI Distinguished Lecture, “Resilience: An Engineering Challenge,” is now available to view on PEER’s YouTube Channel.

The lecture was presented on October 14, 2013 to an overflow crowd of students, academics, and professionals at UC Berkeley, as well as an Internet audience via a live webcast.

Comerio, an internationally recognized expert on disaster recovery, addressed engineering challenges and research opportunities coming out of recent earthquakes in China, Haiti, Chile, New Zealand and Japan. Beyond traditional measurements of estimating building and infrastructure performance, Comerio argued that components such as housing, education, and cultural infrastructure need to be included in 21st Century design and policy development. “We have figured out how to do things building by building, structure by structure; we now need to expand our efforts to really develop some community-scale metrics for resilience.”

This broadcast of the 2013 EERI Distinguished Lecture was co-hosted by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Northern California Chapter, the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER), and was presented as part of the Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials (SEMM) Program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Berkeley.
