Save the Date: SMiRT-22 Conference on Aug 18-23, 2013

Nuclear energy has continued to be an important part of the world’s energy supply despite facing many challenges. With the estimated world population forecasted to reach 9 billion by 2050, the need for energy is expected to be more than the total energy produced to date. This projected growth in energy demand, coupled with the need for carbon free, secure and diverse energy supplies, confirms the potential for significant growth of nuclear energy.

The 22nd International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (SMiRT-22) will be held on August 18 – 23, 2013 in San Francisco, and offers a forum for technical discussions on critical topics facing the nuclear industry today. The topic of safety and reliability will be emphasized in the conference and lessons learned from the recent events, such as the earthquake and tsunami at Fukushima in 2011, will be shared in extended sessions.  A formal call for papers will be issued in March 2012.  The conference topics will include:

  • – Mechanics of Materials
  • – Fracture Mechanics and Structural Integrity
  • – Applied Computation, Simulation and Animation
  • – Characterization of the Loads
  • – Modeling, Testing and Response Analysis of Structures, Systems and Components
  • – Design and Construction Issues
  • – Safety, Reliability, Risk and Margins
  • – Issues related to Operations, Inspection and Maintenance
  • – Waste Management and Fuel Cycle Facilities
  • – Challenges of New Reactors

Additionally, PEER will be hosting a full day special session on Friday August 23, 2013 that will share recent developments and the lastest findings of the NGA-East Program.  Also, information about a new seismic source characterization model for the Central and Eastern United States (CEUS) for use in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) for nuclear facilities will be discussed.

SMiRT-22 is being organized and hosted by the following organizations:
