2010 Summer Internship Opportunity for Master's Students with FM Global & PEER

PEER is pleased to announce a new internship opportunity at FM Global's Boston Office for the summer of 2010! This opportunity is available to current and graduated masters students.

Since 1996, the USGS has developed codes (computer programs) to calculate seismic hazard due to earthquake ground motions. These are used to produce national seismic hazard maps, most recently in 2008. The codes are written in fortran with a few C routines. There are a different set of codes for the hazard of each region of the US, and codes to blend the regional hazards into a single national product.

The student project tasks will be to:

  • – install the codes on a FM linux computer
  • – develop a workflow scheme to run the regional codes and merge the results

This full-time internship is expected to be 10-12 weeks in duration, with a start date around June 14, however there is some flexibility in the start and end dates.

The intern will be paid a stipend directly by PEER that is roughly equivalent to a rate of $19 - $23/hour, depending on the student's educational status:

Completed undergraduate senior year with degree 19.00
Completed 1 yr of Grad school 21.00
Completed 2 yr of Grad school 23.00

It is the student's responsibility to pay for their travel to and from the internship location in the Boston area. They are also responsible for making their own housing arrangements in the Boston area.

The FM Global office in the Boston area is located at 500 River Ridge Road, P.O. Box 9102, Norwood, MA 02062.

Applicant Requirements:

  • – programming experience (in any language)
  • – unix/linux experience desirable
  • – interest in seismic hazards
