Enrich Your Earth Processes Teaching while Learning How to Teach Engineering Design Skills

Fourth grade teachers can enrich their earth science teaching while developing their ability to teach the new science and engineering practices that are at the heart of the Next Generation Science Standards. The NGSS for fourth grade specifically suggests designing earthquake resistant buildings as a way to meet standard 4-ESS3-2: Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural earth processes on humans. This new program will enable you to meet this and other standards in the NGSS as well as supporting the current California State Science Standards for fourth grade.

The nees@berkeley Laboratory and Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center are offering an updated program for the 2013-2014 school year that:

  • – takes you through a hands-on learning experience working collaboratively to design an earthquake resistant building
  • – teaches you the pedagogy for supporting engineering skill development as described in the Next Generation Science Standards
  • – co-teaches a four lesson series in your classroom to bring the engineering design process to your students
  • optional field trip to the earthquake engineering laboratory at UC Berkeley's Richmond Field Station to see engineering in action (bus provided)
  • materials and lesson plans to support independent teaching of this unit in the future

The teacher workshop that starts the program for the 2013-2014 school year will be offered on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at UC Berkeley's Richmond Field Station from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop and program will fill on a first-come basis to a maximum of 20 teachers. Participating teachers will be provided with lunch and offered a $100 stipend for their time and insight on the learning experience.
