Configure the PEER Strong Motion Data Set for use in developing empirical attenuation relations.

Role of this project in supporting PEER’s vision

The Strong Motion Database is a critical input to several PEER projects, as well as a high-profile product of PEER in the earthquake engineering community.

In its expanded and revised form, it will serve as the basis for PEER’s Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) program effort, which will characterize and reduce the overall uncertainties associated with the most common approach to predicting seismic hazard.

Methodology employed

This process involves updating and adding metadata (earthquake source, wave propagation path, and site parameters), adding new earthquakes and sites in terms of metadata as well as motions, and providing an independent checking or review process to verify data quality.

Brief description of past year’s accomplishments and more detail on expected Year 6 accomplishments

This is a single year project.

A subset of the metadata considered as potential dependent or independent parameters along with peak values of acceleration, velocity, and displacement as well as 5% damped response spectral ordinates will be accumulated in a single “flat” file for ease of use in regression analyses.

Describe any instances where you are aware that your results have been used in industry

A number of Working Groups within the PEER NGA program will be utilizing the Data Set in evaluating and recommending potential parameters for inclusion in the new attenuation relations. The resulting models are anticipated to be widely used by in industry and academia to predict seismic hazard. Related PEER projects which use the data sets will have major impacts on practice.
