Loma Prieta Earthquake Commemorative Symposium

This full-day commemorative event highlights lessons learned from the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, accomplishments in the 20 years since the earthquake, and future initiatives that will continue to make our cities and built environment safer from earthquakes.

Why attend?

This event reflects not only on the causes and effects of the Loma Prieta earthquake, but also on the tremendous strides that have been made in the past 20 years to make our cities and lifelines safer, and on efforts that still remain to be done. The Loma Prieta earthquake highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of earthquake hazard reduction. A series of plenary sessions will provide you with detailed information on the developments in many disciplines related to earthquake hazard reduction that have been prompted by the Loma Prieta earthquake, and give insight into where our professions will be heading over the next twenty years. Speakers having wide ranging expertise will examine in a series of plenary sessions the challenges being addressed in their own fields, but also how these fields depend on input from specialists in other disciplines, such as engineering, earth sciences, public policy, urban planning, emergency response and recovery management. Breakout sessions will allow you to examine particular topics in greater depth. These breakout sessions will introduce you to critical issues outside of your usual field of endeavor or provide important information on new projects and initiatives related to design, analysis, research and communication. So the real question is not "Why should you attend?" but really "Can you afford to miss this unique multidisciplinary symposium?"

The Symposium is intended for technically oriented individuals and organizations involved with or interested in earthquake hazard reduction. As such, it is particularly well suited for professional engineers, architects and planners, researchers and students, government (federal, state, county and city) officials, specialists involved with developing or implementing emergency response and recovery plans, building owners, developers and managers, and so on. The meeting may be of course of interest to the general public.
